What’s new this month

A short round-up of what has changed recently. We publish one of these regularly, including the parts that did not go to plan.
New this month
Faster search
Search now returns results substantially quicker on large result sets, and filters apply without reloading the page. This was the most requested change by some distance.
Better pages on phones
Pages have been reworked for narrow screens: bigger tap targets, fewer things hidden behind menus, and images that no longer push the layout sideways. Most people arrive on a phone, and that should have been true sooner than it was.
Clearer notifications
- Related notifications are grouped rather than arriving one by one.
- You can turn off each type separately instead of all or nothing.
- The email version now matches what you see on the site.
Fixed
- Saved items occasionally not appearing on a second device.
- A rare case where a draft could be lost by navigating away mid-edit.
- Several smaller layout problems in right-to-left languages.
Coming next
Work in progress, in rough order:
- Bulk editing, so several pages can be updated at once.
- A clearer stats view, with a longer history.
- More export options, so your data is genuinely yours to take.
What we decided not to do
We looked seriously at automatic translation of user-written content and decided against it for now. The quality was not good enough to publish under someone else’s name without their say-so, and getting that consent right is a bigger piece of work than the translation itself.
We would rather ship a smaller change that works than a larger one that needs explaining.
